I think this is actually one of his more focused interviews/rants, and his general notions are more clear/less distracted here than anywhere else I can think of. There’s a whole performance after the interview… Jonathan Messe is a spellcaster, a contemporary art conjurer and he should be cloned into an army of elementary school civics teachers, their pedagogy dial with “mutate!” set to 11. He should be an airborne virus, not a person. For best results, play all videos simultaneously or don’t even play them and just imagine them while walking in a field of black roses. It’s your choice.

Yoshimura Masunobu, a founder of the Neo-Dada Organizers, has died. I do not know if he is a victim of the earthquake or if he has simply passed away. He was a key figure in the Anti-Art movement and took part in the seminal Yomiuri Independent Exhibitions that shaped avant garde art in Japan during in the postwar climate of the 1950′s. Yoshimura was also indirectly responsible for the “white make-up” aesthetic associated with Butoh.

My prom involved rocking the world’s most fabulous, glam pants only to end up double booked at my table, left with no seat or food for me and my lady, being tailed by a hotel detective and discovering that the Poorman was the DJ. I doubt I was in the building for more than an hour before heading on to other pursuits… So I’ve got a serious case of unresolved prom issues, and like all puny, meatbag humans, I’ve got robot envy. So damn you Devon Tsuno, Kiel Johnson and Cypress College Art Gallery for breaking my heart with your awesome robot prom, the end result of all that awesome workshopping. I can practically here the laughter and joy from here…

Anyways, although I’m sure that all of our minds will be vacuumed right out of our skulls later when this gets video-ized, but for now, we can all play voyeur to a night of love and cardboard via the 212 photos in Devon’s Flickr set from the event.

Apparently I wasn’t the only one not invited to robot prom…

Things have been too quiet on the Murakami front lately. The above video, Akihibara Majokko Princess, somehow fills the empty space between his colossal (and totally premature) MOCA retrospective and whatever will come next from the knockoff handbag inspirer and lord of Japanese pop. In the video, commissioned by Murakami and directed by Terminator Salvation (mis)director McG, Kirsten Dunst explodes the craniums of lonely nerds and laptop potatoes by singing a cover of The Vapors’ Turning Japanese while wandering around Akihibara, accompanied by what might best be described as a series of “shallowly stereotypical Japanese things”. The video was part of the exhibition Pop Life at the Tate Modern last fall. via BoingBoing.
