I was lucky enough to be at the press preview for LACMA’s new show, American Stories, this morning. It’s a solid, glorious show, put together in partnership by LACMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that brings together a staggering roster of 18th and 19th Century works by American artists. It’s a “legitimate blockbuster” and deservedly so, but more on the actual show later, for now we’ll concentrate on something more superficial.
Lots of folks from both museums were wandering about the preview, and I walked by the below audio gem that says so much about the “business of museums” today:
LACMA Person (describing the flow of the exhibition): “…and we end up in the museum shop, just like you do.”
Met Person (with an air of absolute sincerity): “Of course. Always.”
