I guess this post means I’ve woken up from my winter hibernation. I’ve changed some of the back end of the site, and the right sidebar isn’t behaving, but welcome the new wider format, intended to catch up to higher resolution monitors. Let me know if anything (other than the sidebar) isn’t working right.
Anyways, on to the greatness. Musician Emily Lacy is embedded in LACMA’s Pavilion for Japanese Art (which is a goddamn architectural masterpiece, no matter how crazily dated it now is), doing a residency called Temples of the Mind. The short video above is just a tiny taste – Emily is on site Thursday – Sunday, 3-8pm, though January 31. The Japanese Pavilion is the perfect place for a residency like this, and Lacy’s music totally compliments the space. She has five levels set up, with a variety of instruments. When I was there she was singing and playing guitar, but I’ll be back and hopefully catch her or a guest on the drum kit or keyboards. Emily recommends that folks bring a blanket and set themselves up and get comfortable, and that’s just what I’ll be doing on my next visit.
During my visit, Emily was joined by a guest artist, doing a live drawing on an overhead projector.
The drawing was projected onto the Pavilion’s skylight, which somehow made the whole space come alive, made me totally conscious of aspects of the architecture that I hadn’t considered before. Thank you.
