The above was supposed to be Thai Sliced Beef with Coconut Curry, but was terribly chewy pot roast instead. With nuked frozen veggies. I think the idea with this meal was to make you really, really glad that you were going to Asia where there’s more good food than you can ever imagine. So I’m considering this dish inspirational, as in inspiring me to eat great Korean food while I’m here, and inspiring me to never, ever fly Delta/Northwest again.
This meal was followed by an equally unpalatable chicken with fried rice breakfast that had the texture and flavour of microwaved chunks of chicken/rice goo. Not a pleasure, by any means, but it did have fruit, which was pretty decent.
Served on my connecting flight from Narita to Incheon, some Korean flavour going on here. The best part of the meal was the apples, which were shockingly good and fresh. That chicken wing was eerie, as in I expected Korean flavour, but it tasted exactly like KFC original recipe. Nothing else on Earth tastes like that, so that was one heck of a “surprised to see you here” moment. This meal wasn’t that bad, but it wasn’t that good, either.
At least there’s beer! Practically had to fight to get a decent beer on the plane (who serves Corona on a flight to Tokyo?), but a very helpful attendant made my day. I guess the sad thing about Delta’s version of food is that I really like the transitional experience of eating airplane food on international flights, like a teaser of what’s to come. I know it’s never extraordinary, but it’s like a little ritual between home and not-home that I usually really enjoy. But at least I’m starving for food joy now – whatever I eat next is probably going to blow my mind.
