Is This the Future of MOCA?

Street Fighter IV Release Shindig at MOCA

The Geffen’s current existence as empty, cavernous, unused space continues (a little backstory here). Last Thursday evening, Capcom rented the shuttered Geffen Contemporary to showcase their upcoming game Street Fighter IV (which better be awesome, dammit!). About a gazillion joystick rocking dudes and bros were there, some camped out hours in advance, in a line that never seemed to move. Eric Nakamura actually popped in and has a a review of the event.

Question: If MOCA can’t seem to handle the Geffen, rather than shutter it, why not turn it temporarily over to artists, gallerists or other non-profits? I’m always up for keeping the lights on – use the space as a petri dish and see what grows.

Update – Queequeg put up a pretty good review of the event over at blogging.la.

  • Hey Marshall,

I’m really enjoying your coverage of the Geffen.

  • I think the Geffen needs to be the focus of MOCA, and it’s practically a crime that it’s closed. I’d like to write more about MOCA, but it’s hard to get all the details right on some of the stuff that needs to be out in the air, and I’m not into putting my foot too far down my throat.
