Acutal Political Art

Today, most political art lacks relevance, it’s become  forum for culture jamming remixes from over-educated 1st Worlders who think they know what’s best for folks on the other side of things.  But the above, a monument by Laith al-Amiri to still imprisoned Iraqi journalist and shoe sniper Muntadhir al-Zaidi is the real deal.  [...]

Supersonic 2009

On Friday, I attended the LA Art Show, primarily to check out Supersonic 2009 and to listen to the Is Art Criticism Still Relevant? panel discussion. Maybe I wanted to get in a little art commerce voyeurism – anyone who wants to buy me a 7K Robert Longo diptych is welcome to…

Yoshitomo Nara @ Blum & Poe

I just love that damn wagon.  It’s one of those things you wish you’d made yourself.  It’s on view at Blum & Poe until January 31.  Inside peek below.

Mel Ramos in the NYT

I enjoyed reading Ken Johnson’s NY Times brief piece (Thank you Tyler Green for bringing it to my attention), defending Mel Ramos’ paintings of women as having a proper place in art tradition and practice. I’ve got show envy, wish there was a Ramos show in LA to go fawn over.

Do The Weekend

This weekend is dominated by two art fairs, the Santa Monica-bound Art LA 2009 and the Convention Center-bound LA Art Show.  Which art swap meet will reign supreme?  You be the judge.  And there’s a fair number of openings all around town, too.

Judith Hoffberg, 1934-2009

Many of us in LA (and far, far beyond) will miss Judith Hoffberg, a constant presence at artists’ book-related events in LA. I was introduced to Judith through my good friend and artist book enthusiast, Jean Clad when she curated Metaphorical Books at Angels Gate in 2004 and Judith came down to see it. [...]

So what’s going on in the shut down Geffen Contemporary anyways…

Film shoots, maybe.

A lot of us feel the the Geffen is MOCA’s prime gallery space, that the Grand Avenue site is a disaster, located in a Ghost Town, and with gallery space that leaves a lot to be desired.  Many of us would rather see the Geffen open and Grand Avenue closed, if [...]

Post-Post-Apocalypse: Civilization, Tomorrow, January 17, 7-10 PM

I mentioned this briefly in my Do The Weekend, but I wanted to give the thorough version of the what’s up for the event.

Post-Post-Apocalypse: Civilization

Post-Post-Apocalypse, an exhibition in three parts, will be closing on Saturday, January 17, with a final event, Civilization. Edith and I have built a house for ourselves [...]

Andrew Wyeth, 1917-2009

This is getting ridiculous. Planes fall out of the sky and everyone lives, but folks are just passing, one after another. It’s 80 degrees in California and it’s “flesh burning freezing” in parts of the country. Something mysterious is afoot, I tell you.

One of my favourite “spend time with it” paintings in [...]

Do The Weekend

I’m kind of busy with Post-Post-Apocalypse this weekend, so that’s a lot of me on this list.  But there’s other non-me stuff if you’re tired of my stuff, too.

Thursday, January 15

Post-Post-Apocalypse: Michael Lewis Miller’s 5th Apocalyptic Birthday Bash @ The Loft. Michael is trying to assemble 50 cakes for his not [...]
