Post-Post-Apocalypse - Mayan Calendar Riff - Incomplete

So we started installing/painting yesterday. First in is my Mayan Calendar Riff painting. Why Mayan Apocalypse? Because it’s vague, imminent (December 21, 2012), full of New Age hokeyness and out of the grab bag of possible apocalypses, it tends to place apocalypse as part of a cycle. Besides, Mesoamerican graphic design just doesn’t get mined/ripped off enough these days.

I really liked this in its incomplete state up there. I was tempted to stop painting right then. I just acquired a new studio, so I’ll have the opportunity to experiment more with these images in their incomplete/malleable states.

Above – Both Nicholas Klemek and Michele Hubacek lent a hand in the painting.

Post-Post-Apocalypse - Mayan Calendar Riff - Semi-Finished (Needs Clean Up)

Above – Pretty much finished. This painting needs a lot of clean up. I was spoiled by Thai housepaint, which has way, way better flow than Behr housepaint from Home Depot. Anyone who has a hookup with an Thai industrial paint importer, drop me a line. Given the really tiny volume of paint it takes to realize one of these pieces, I should probably switch to a higher quality artist paint, but I’m loathe to use any materials I can’t source at a hardware store.
