I’m at the Tallahasse airport (which has free power and free WiFi!), and I’m one happy Californian, topping off a too short trip with a much deserved and lusted after meal at the roadside shrine of my pagan faith, a Waffle House.

My Southern must-eat-at spot is Sonny’s real pit barbecue. If you are near one, don’t miss the pulled pork sandwich.
There was a Sonny’s in Tallahassee, but I only had one real meal opportunity while I was there, and Waffle House was calling. I noticed Sonny’s as they have a big ad in the visitor’s magazine that claims they were voted the best barbecue in Tallahassee seven years running. I didn’t know they were a chain, though. So maybe I can find one in another city, since it will be at least a year before I return to Tallahassee.
They are a big chain, so the Sonny’s urge can be satified all over the Southeast. My Sonny’s was in Orange Park, FL. The BBQ pork, with the honey mustard and BBQ sauce together, is a little chunk of heaven. And the smell- nothing like real Southern pit BBQ in this world. The closest thing I have found out here is JayBees on Avalon. They have a fine way with the pig as well.
JayBee’s is the best BBQ in the South Bay, if not Los Angeles. Nothing like cheap white bread, meat and sauce. They have a pretty good sauce, a rarity in California, and their beans, potato salad and macaroni and cheese are to die for.
