I’m not one to usually mourn the passing of actors, but Charleton Heston’s world weary cynicism as portrayed in classics like Planet of the Apes I & II, Earthquake, The Omega Man and Soylent Green (heck, even his Moses seems slightly cynical) deeply informed my sense of manliness and were intellectual touchstones when I was growing up. If our contemporary, filmic mythologizing taught me anything about the nature of a hero, or a scoundrel, Heston’s performances would be the primary source. I hope he’s buried with clenched teeth, in a loincloth and that they never take his gun away.
