There are a couple of openings this weekend that I’d like pimp here.
Saturday, January 12
Systems Theory at the Torrance Art Museum. Curator Kristina Newhouse has assembled a real team of crack artists “who utilize a system to create their artworks and reveals how that system influences the way in which their artwork looks.” This show features Tao Urban, who’s work I’ve been very, very enthusiastic about for some time now, and my AGCC co-worker Meeson Pae Yang, who’s sculptural and installation works I’ve had the privilege to show at both Walled City and in Downstairs Gallery at the Center. Other artists include Sky Burchard, Enrique Castrejon, Kiel Johnson, Flora Kao, Joe Tauber and Shirley Tse. In Gallery Two at TAM, is Jessica Rath’s installation Song to Snore. Reception is 7-10 PM.
Some Paintings at Track 16. All I know about this show is that Adrian de la Pena is in it, and that’s reason enough to go. Outside of that, I have no idea what other artists are in this Doug Harvey curated show. The press release reveals nothing, which could either be a very good thing or a very bad thing – I’m leaning towards very good. Spencer Cross over at art.blogging.la has a post with video of John Kilduff’s Let’s Paint TV, which muse be seen to be believed and which will be taking place during the reception. Also performing are The Spirit Girls, Wounded Lion and others. Reception is 7-11 PM.
Sunday, January 13
Linsley Lambert, The Contemporary Portrait at Roark. Linsley is a real-deal portrait painter and a sweetheart too. Her paintings of hockey players as religious icons (violence prone Marty McSorley here, as an angel), made me fall in love with her work. This is work that really has to be seen in person. Roark is located at 549 W. 23rd St., Los Angeles, CA 90007, Reception is 2-5 PM.
